Our first building, located at 10th and Franklin streets in Carlyle.

Mission work was begun in 1932 by Rev. FAC Meyer of Centralia and Rev F. Zucker of Hoffman. The first service was held in the Presbyterian Church with Dr. Walter A. Meier of the Lutheran Hour as speaker. Further services were held in the Court House until arrangements were made to use the Episcopal Church on 10th and Franklin.

The Carlyle Lutheran Church installed its first resident pastor, Rev. Henry Dederer, on April 15, 1934. On September 10th of the same year Messiah Lutheran Church was organized and accepted into the Southern Illinois District of the Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod.

In April 1940, with the assistance of the Mission Board, the congregation purchased a city block. In 1942 the congregation built the present parsonage. In 1947 the congregation purchased an army chapel at Georges Air Field near Lawrenceville, IL. The building was dismantled, transported by truck and reassembled on the lot south of the parsonage. More than 800 people gathered on Sunday afternoon, December 14, 1947 to witness the dedication.

In December 1950 there was a major fire that very nearly resulted in the total loss of the church building. But with the work of many volunteers the sanctuary was ready for the Confirmation service on Palm Sunday.

In 1968 plans were begun for a new worship facility. By the Fall of 1970, through the efforts of many people working together, the present facility became a reality. The final service at the old building was held on September 6. The congregation, led by Pastor Robert Kahre, processed to the new building. A special community service was held Sept. 13.

As we approach the 65th anniversary of Messiah congregation, the ministry continues. We gather weekly to worship the true Messiah, Jesus Christ. We gather to study His Word and to be strengthened at His altar. We go forth into the community proclaiming the Good News of His love and forgiveness. We go forth serving others in His name.
